September always feels like someone suddenly turns the speed up on life. School is back, schedules fill up again, evenings get shorter, and somehow everyone still expects dinner to appear at a reasonable hour.
This is exactly when I start leaning on dinners that are easy enough for a weeknight but still feel like an actual meal. I also start craving those first cozy fall flavors without going completely into heavy casserole mode just yet.
These 19 easy September dinners have been some of my favorites for getting through busy evenings. There are creamy pastas, quick skillet meals, sheet-pan dinners, soups for cooler nights, and a few recipes that have saved me when cooking was very low on my list of priorities.
1) Creamy Shrimp Penne Pasta By Big Cravings

This is one of our easiest pasta dinners when I want something that feels a little more special without creating a pile of dishes. The creamy sauce and shrimp make it surprisingly satisfying, and it comes together quickly enough for those nights when dinner has been completely forgotten until 6 p.m.
2) Pumpkin Sausage Gnocchi By xoxoBella

Pumpkin, sausage, and pillowy gnocchi are such a good combination once September arrives. I loved how cozy this tasted without requiring an entire afternoon in the kitchen. It has plenty of savory flavor, and the pumpkin makes the sauce creamy and distinctly fall-ish without making dinner taste overly sweet.
3) Chicken Wild Rice Soup By Big Cravings

Our chicken wild rice soup is one I start making again as soon as the evenings get a little cooler. It is hearty enough to count as dinner, reheats beautifully, and leftovers are honestly even better the next day. Make a big pot and you’ve basically handled tomorrow’s lunch too.
4) Apple Cider Glazed Chicken By Brownie Bites

This chicken was one of those September dinners that made the kitchen smell incredible. The apple cider glaze gives it that unmistakable early-fall flavor while keeping the meal savory enough for dinner. It is also a nice change when everyone is getting bored of the usual plain chicken routine.
5) Broiled Chicken Thighs With Garlic Butter By Big Cravings

These are one of our best answers to the classic “I have chicken thighs, now what?” problem. Broiling gets the outside beautifully browned while the garlic butter adds plenty of flavor. Add a quick vegetable and some rice or potatoes and you’ve got a proper dinner with very little effort.
6) One-Pot Tortellini With Sausage and Tomato Cream Sauce By Yellow Bliss Road

I have a weakness for dinners where the pasta, meat, and sauce all end up in the same pot. This tortellini is creamy, filling, and very family-friendly, while the sausage gives the sauce enough flavor that it doesn’t taste like one of those rushed “emergency dinners.”
7) Pizza Baguette By Big Cravings

Our pizza baguettes are for the nights when nobody has the patience for a complicated recipe. They’re crispy, cheesy, ridiculously easy, and always disappear quickly. I also love letting everyone choose their own toppings, which conveniently stops at least a few of the usual dinner-table complaints.
8) Grilled Maple Dijon Pork Chops By Little House Big Alaska

The maple-Dijon combination on these pork chops hits that perfect September sweet spot between summer and fall flavors. The glaze gives the pork plenty of flavor without needing a long ingredient list, and it pairs especially well with roasted potatoes, green beans, or an easy apple salad.
9) Keto Chicken Thighs With Mushroom Sauce By Big Cravings

This is one of our chicken recipes that feels much more indulgent than the amount of effort involved. The mushroom sauce is rich and savory, while the chicken thighs stay juicy and flavorful. It’s especially good with green beans, cauliflower mash, or any vegetable that can soak up that sauce.
10) Sheet Pan Sausage, Sweet Potatoes, Apples and Brussels Sprouts By Jennifer Cooks

This sheet-pan dinner basically looks and tastes like September landed on one baking tray. Sausage, sweet potatoes, apples, and Brussels sprouts work surprisingly well together, and I especially appreciate that everything cooks at once. Fewer dishes at the end of a busy weekday is always a win.
11) Keto Turkey Meatballs By Big Cravings

Our turkey meatballs are one of those recipes worth making extra of because they disappear fast and the leftovers are incredibly useful. They’re easy to pair with vegetables, pasta, or a simple salad, and they’re also handy for meal prep when September schedules start getting a little chaotic.
12) One-Pot Beef Stroganoff By Yellow Bliss Road

Beef stroganoff is pure comfort food, but this one-pot version makes it much more realistic for a Tuesday night. It’s creamy, beefy, filling, and doesn’t leave half the kitchen waiting to be washed afterward. This is exactly the kind of dinner I want once September evenings start feeling cooler.
13) Chicken Flatbread Pizza By Big Cravings

Our chicken flatbread pizza is another favorite when a full homemade pizza feels like too much work. The flatbread keeps everything quick and crisp, while the chicken makes it substantial enough for dinner. It’s also a very easy way to use up cooked chicken sitting in the fridge.
14) Butternut Squash Pasta Sauce By By The Forkful

This butternut squash pasta sauce is such a good way to ease into fall cooking. It’s creamy and comforting without relying on an ultra-heavy sauce, and the squash adds a lovely sweetness. I like it on busy nights because a simple bowl of pasta suddenly feels much more seasonal.
15) Spicy Honey Garlic Salmon By Cookin’ With Mima

This salmon has that sweet-spicy combination that makes a very simple dinner feel far more exciting. The honey garlic glaze is packed with flavor, and salmon is always useful when I need something that cooks quickly. Add rice and a green vegetable and dinner is pretty much sorted.
16) Zuppa Toscana By Mom On TimeOut

The first genuinely chilly September evening is usually all the excuse I need to bring soup back into regular rotation. This Zuppa Toscana is creamy, hearty, and loaded with enough sausage and potatoes to make it feel like dinner rather than something you’ll be hungry after an hour later.
17) Chicken Squash Summer Skillet By Fit Foodie Finds

This skillet is perfect for that awkward part of September when the calendar says fall but the garden and grocery store are still full of summer squash. Chicken makes it filling, the vegetables keep everything fresh, and cooking it all in one skillet makes cleanup pleasantly painless.
18) Skillet Chicken Enchiladas By Two Peas & Their Pod

These skillet chicken enchiladas give you all those cheesy, saucy enchilada flavors without turning dinner into a major project. I love recipes like this during busy weeks because everyone gets a comforting, proper meal and I’m not standing around individually rolling enchiladas when I’m already tired.
19) Easy Skillet Vegetable Lasagna By Two Peas & Their Pod

Lasagna on a weeknight normally requires a level of optimism I simply don’t have, which is why this skillet version is such a good compromise. You still get those cozy tomato, pasta, vegetable, and cheese flavors, but in a much more manageable format for a busy September evening.
September dinners are a strange balancing act. I’m ready for creamy pasta, soup, apples, squash, and everything cozy, but I’m absolutely not ready to spend two hours making dinner after an already packed day.
That’s why I keep coming back to recipes like these. Some are quick enough for the truly chaotic nights, some make excellent leftovers, and others just make an ordinary Wednesday feel a little more like fall.
And if dinner happens to involve one pan and almost no cleanup? At this point in the year, I consider that a seasonal ingredient too.
